Toyota's first global EV was recalled six weeks after launch — the wheels could fall off

The bZ4X launched in Japan on 12 May 2022 as Toyota's first globally marketed battery-electric vehicle. Six weeks later, on 23 June, Toyota notified safety regulators that the hub bolts on the wheels could loosen after repeated sharp turns and sudden braking — to the point where a wheel could detach from the vehicle. It recalled approximately 2,700 bZ4Xs, nearly every vehicle it had produced, and the same platform's Subaru Solterra was recalled for the same defect.

Toyota told owners not to drive the cars until a fix was performed, halted sales, and suspended production. Production stayed halted from 23 June until 6 October 2022, when Toyota announced a remedy and resumed building the cars — a product that had been on sale for six weeks was dead in the water for more than three months, and early buyers were left with cars they were told not to drive.

The recall punctured the launch of Toyota's flagship electrification push. The bZ4X was also criticised for slow charging — all-wheel-drive versions could take an hour for a 0–80% charge and limited fast charging to three sessions a day. Toyota's electrification pace stayed cautious and slow relative to rivals long after the recall.

Recalled all ~2,700 built and halted production for 3.5 months, handing the launch window to competitors.
