The Tacoma Narrows Bridge galloped in the wind for four months, then tore itself apart

Engineers knew it bounced — locals called it Galloping Gertie and drove across for fun. On November 7, 1940, a 42-mph wind found its rhythm.

What happened

When it opened in July 1940, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge was the third-longest suspension span on Earth and the most elegant: a roadway just 39 feet wide hung on shallow plate girders, designed by Leon Moisseiff on the theory that longer, lighter spans could flex safely. It flexed from day one. Vertical waves rolled along the deck in mild breezes; drivers watched cars ahead disappear into troughs. The state hired consultants and studied damping while the public treated the bounce as an attraction.

On the morning of November 7, 1940, in a steady 42-mph wind, the motion changed character — from vertical waves to a violent corkscrew twist, the deck tilting 45 degrees each way. The bridge writhed for about an hour, long enough for film crews to capture it, and then the center span ripped free and fell into Puget Sound. The only casualty was Tubby, a cocker spaniel too terrified to leave a stranded car.

The failure mode was aeroelastic flutter: the solid girders caught the wind, and the twisting fed energy back into itself faster than the structure could shed it. The investigation transformed bridge engineering — wind-tunnel testing of deck sections became mandatory, and every long span since has been shaped as much by aerodynamics as by gravity.

Why it happened

  • Design theory extrapolated past its evidence: lighter and narrower had worked, so lighter and narrower still was assumed fine.
  • Solid plate girders caught wind that older open trusses let through — an aerodynamic change nobody analyzed aerodynamically.
  • Four months of visible oscillation was normalized as a quirk instead of treated as data.
  • The discipline had no flutter theory yet; the bridge was the experiment.

The lesson

A system loudly telling you something is wrong does not care that your model says it's fine. Warnings you get used to are still warnings.

Aftermath

The insurance agent who had pocketed the premium instead of insuring the bridge went to jail. The replacement, opened 1950 with open trusses and wind tunnel hours behind it, still stands. The 1940 film is shown to every engineering freshman on Earth.
