A 102-year bag house lived on rented brands — when Paul Smith left, it fell
Style sold Paul Smith and Mila Schön bags in Japan's department stores for a century. The Paul Smith license ended 2025; no sponsor came. Bankrupt 18 September.

What happened
Style was founded in 1923 and incorporated in 1992, planning and wholesaling bags and leather goods to department stores across Japan — mostly under other people's names: licenses including Paul Smith, Mila Schön, Vivienne Westwood and HANAE MORI. Sales peaked at roughly ¥9 billion in the year to March 2018.
The pandemic halved the department-store business — closures and shortened hours — and the company slid into the red: about ¥4.4 billion in sales in the year to March 2025 with an operating loss near ¥800 million. Then came the decisive blow: the core Paul Smith sublicense was confirmed to end at the close of 2025.
Style tried to replace its anchor — launching new lines under Paul Stuart and Orla Kiely and searching for a sponsor — but neither compensated. On 19 August 2025 it ceased business and shut its STYLE SHOP online store; on 18 September the Tokyo District Court began bankruptcy proceedings, with liabilities of about ¥1.18 billion.
Why it happened
- The revenue was rented: the anchor license belonged to a London headquarters, and when it was set to expire there was no owned brand to fall back on.
- The pandemic halved the department-store channel before the license blow landed, leaving no cash cushion to rebuild the portfolio.
- Late attempts to launch replacement licenses and find a sponsor failed; management chose to stop rather than run a hollowed-out shell.
The lesson
Licensed brands are rented customers. Style's century-old bag business peaked at ¥9B on names it didn't own; when the Paul Smith license was set to expire, there was no brand, sponsor or cash.
Aftermath
Bankruptcy proceedings began at the Tokyo District Court on 18 September 2025, a month after the business stopped. Style's exit removed one of Japan's department-store bag wholesalers after 102 years, another casualty of licensed fashion's thin margins and the shrinking department-store channel.
