What happened

Takahiro Miyashita founded TAKAHIROMIYASHITATheSoloIst. in 2010 to build, in his words, a personal yet artisanal brand. A year later its base opened at Palace Aoyama — a 1968 building across from the Nezu Museum — as grocerystore., a select shop carrying his designs and curated wardrobe pieces. In 2018 it was renovated and reopened as the brand's flagship, with the full lineup from the collection line to collaborations and store exclusives.

Fifteen years in, the founder ended it. On 25 July 2025 Miyashita announced his departure, calling it time to lower the curtain on a story that had played like a symphony; the Autumn/Winter 2025–26 collection, 'THE BLACK -AND- WHITE REALISM', was his coda. On 30 April 2026 the Aoyama flagship closed after roughly fifteen years of operation.

The brand continues through its other directly-run stores, in Kanazawa and Fukuoka. The Aoyama space itself returns full circle: it is to be renovated and reopen in mid-May under the old name grocerystore. — a new concept store where the founder's shop once stood.

Why it happened

  • The brand was the designer; when he decided the fifteenth year was the finale, the flagship that staged his world lost its centre.
  • The departure and the closure came within nine months — an ending sequenced, not coincidental.
  • A flagship built around one person's vision can be renamed and re-opened, but it cannot outlast the person.

The lesson

When the founder is the brand, retirement is closure. Miyashita left TheSoloist in its 15th year; within a year the Tokyo flagship was gone too.

Aftermath

TAKAHIROMIYASHITATheSoloIst. continues with its directly-run stores in Kanazawa and Fukuoka. The Palace Aoyama space is to reopen on 15 May as a new-concept grocerystore. Miyashita — who framed the split as a 'creative restart' for both sides — moved on to his next chapter.
