RED's $1,295 holographic phone was a $1,295 brick with a gimmick screen

RED, the cinema camera company, launched a $1,295 phone with a 'holographic' display. The screen gave users headaches. The company exited phones in 2019.

What happened

RED Digital Cinema, known for its $50,000+ professional cinema cameras, announced the Hydrogen One in 2017: a $1,295 smartphone with a 'holographic' light-field display that promised glasses-free 3D. The phone was marketed to RED's professional filmmaker community as a content creation device.

When the Hydrogen One finally shipped in November 2018, the 'holographic' display was underwhelming: a dim, low-resolution screen that caused eye strain and headaches for many users. The phone was bulky, heavy, and ran a nearly stock version of Android with few custom features. The camera, which should have been RED's strength, was mediocre.

Reviews were devastating. The phone was called 'a $1,295 brick' and 'the worst phone of the year.' RED's phone division was shut down in 2019. The case illustrated how a brand's reputation in one category (cinema cameras) does not transfer to another (smartphones), and how a gimmick feature cannot carry a product when the fundamentals are wrong.

Why it happened

  • The 'holographic' display was dim, low-resolution and caused eye strain — the opposite of the promised experience.
  • The phone was bulky, heavy, and ran stock Android with few custom features.
  • The camera, RED's supposed strength, was mediocre compared to flagship phones.
  • RED's cinema camera reputation did not transfer to the smartphone market.

The lesson

A brand's reputation in one category doesn't transfer to another. RED made $50K cinema cameras; that didn't make a $1,295 phone good. A gimmick can't carry bad fundamentals.

Aftermath

RED shut down its phone division in 2019. The company refocused on its core cinema camera business. The Hydrogen One is remembered as one of the worst phone launches in history and a cautionary tale about brand extension.
