Rapido promised an auto in five minutes — then had to refund the guarantee

India's CCPA fined Rapido ₹10 lakh after its guaranteed-auto and cashback ads hid conditions that changed what customers would receive.

What happened

Rapido advertised services in India with claims including "Guaranteed Auto" and "Auto in 5 min or get ₹50." The campaign presented a fast, assured ride and compensation if the promise failed.

The Central Consumer Protection Authority said the offer's conditions changed its apparent value. The promised ₹50 was issued as Rapido coins, usable only for bike rides and valid for seven days; the guarantee was attributed in the terms to individual drivers rather than Rapido itself.

On 20 August 2025, the CCPA imposed a ₹10 lakh penalty. It ordered Rapido to stop the misleading advertisements, fully reimburse affected users without conditions, and submit a compliance report within 15 days. Business Today reported that the ads had run for 548 days in multiple languages across more than 120 cities.

The mistake was advertising the headline promise as the product while leaving the restrictions to the terms. A promotion can be technically described in its fine print and still fail when the ordinary customer reasonably understands a different guarantee.

Why it happened

  • The headline promised a guaranteed auto and ₹50 compensation while the terms limited both the service and the value of the remedy
  • Rapido treated driver-level availability as a platform-level guarantee in the main advertising message
  • The campaign ran across more than 120 cities and multiple languages, multiplying exposure before the conditions were corrected
  • A cashback remedy restricted to short-lived coins did not match the ordinary meaning of a ₹50 compensation promise

The lesson

A promotion's headline must describe the remedy customers can actually use. Fine print cannot rescue a guarantee whose ordinary meaning is broader than its conditions.
