Piranha Bytes made Gothic and ELEX for 25 years — then Embracer couldn't find a buyer
Piranha Bytes built a following with niche RPGs like Gothic and ELEX, but Embracer's cost cuts left the studio without a buyer.

What happened
Piranha Bytes was a German video game developer founded in 1997 in Bochum by Alex Brüggemann, Michael Hoge, Stefan Nyul, and Tom Putzki. The studio became famous for its Gothic series of open-world role-playing games, starting with Gothic in 2001, which developed a cult following for its immersive world design and ambitious scope despite technical roughness. The studio continued with Gothic II (2002), Gothic 3 (2006), the Risen series (2009–2014), and the ELEX series (2017–2022) — all built on the same formula of dense, player-driven open-world RPGs with Eurojank charm.
In 2019, THQ Nordic (a subsidiary of Embracer Group) acquired Piranha Bytes. At the time the studio had 31 employees. Embracer went on an acquisition spree, buying hundreds of studios, but by 2023 its debt had grown unmanageable. Embracer began a restructuring program involving layoffs and studio closures. THQ Nordic tried to sell Piranha Bytes but found no buyer willing to take on a niche RPG developer with a single genre and a small team.
In December 2023, Piranha Bytes laid off all staff, reducing the studio to a shell. The founders expressed optimism about finding a partner, but none materialized. The studio shut down permanently in late June 2024, confirmed by a former employee in July 2024. A third ELEX game, partly financed with €3.2 million from the German government, was left in limbo.
Why it happened
- Piranha Bytes spent 25 years on a single genre — dense open-world RPGs — but as the industry moved toward blockbusters and live-service games, their niche audience was too small
- Embracer Group's 2023 debt crisis turned small niche studios into expendable assets — Piranha Bytes was listed for sale and no buyer wanted a studio with one aging franchise
- The studio never diversified: every game since Gothic followed the same formula, making the company's value depend on a genre with a shrinking audience
The lesson
A cult following sustains a studio only while the parent carries it. When Embracer ran into debt, Piranha Bytes' niche RPGs couldn't justify a rescue.
Aftermath
Piranha Bytes closed in June 2024. All 33 employees lost their jobs. The third ELEX game, codenamed Wiki6 and partly funded by the German government, remains unfinished and unreleased. The Gothic and Risen series are now owned by THQ Nordic, which has contracted other studios to develop remakes. Piranha Bytes became one of several studios closed or sold by Embracer during its 2023–2024 restructuring, alongside Free Radical Design, Volition, and others.
