The Piltdown Man 'missing link' was a forgery that fooled science for 41 years

What happened
In 1912, Charles Dawson, an amateur archaeologist with a reputation for local 'discoveries,' announced that he had found the 'missing link' between apes and humans in a gravel pit at Piltdown, in southern England. Working with Arthur Smith Woodward, a senior figure at the Natural History Museum, Dawson produced skull fragments and a jawbone that seemed to combine a human-like cranium with an ape-like jaw. The find was named Eoanthropus dawsoni — 'Dawson's dawn-man' — and was celebrated as a major breakthrough in human evolution.
Doubts were raised almost immediately by some scientists, who questioned whether the human skull and the ape jaw really belonged together. But the find fit a powerful expectation of the time — that human evolution began with a large brain — and Dawson's standing lent it credibility. For decades, Piltdown Man was treated as a genuine ancestor and shaped how researchers thought about human origins, while other, more authentic fossils were sidelined because they didn't match the Piltdown model.
The hoax was finally and definitively exposed in 1953, 41 years after the announcement, when new dating and analysis techniques showed the fragments were a composite forgery: the jaw and teeth of an orangutan, filed down and chemically stained to look ancient, planted alongside a modern human cranium. A 2016 scientific review concluded that Dawson himself had perpetrated the fraud, apparently in pursuit of scientific recognition. Piltdown Man remains one of the most famous scientific hoaxes in history.
