Nikola's truck rolled downhill — and the $1B fraud rolled into court

What happened
Nikola Corporation, an electric and hydrogen truck startup, went public via SPAC in June 2020 at a valuation that briefly exceeded Ford's. Founder Trevor Milton was a charismatic promoter who made bold claims about Nikola's technology, partnerships and production timeline.
In September 2020, short-seller Hindenburg Research published a report calling Nikola 'an intricate fraud.' The report revealed that Nikola's 2018 demo video, which showed a truck driving under its own power, was actually filmed with the truck coasting downhill on a tilted road. Milton had claimed the truck was 'rolling' under its own power.
Milton resigned as chairman. The SEC charged him with fraud, and he was convicted in 2022 on three counts of securities and wire fraud, sentenced to four years in prison. Nikola's stock fell over 90% from its peak. The case became a cautionary tale about SPAC-era hype and the danger of charismatic founders who substitute promotion for product.
Why it happened
- Nikola's demo video was filmed with the truck coasting downhill, misrepresenting the technology's readiness.
- Founder Trevor Milton made claims about technology and partnerships that were not supported by reality.
- The SPAC listing process allowed Nikola to go public with less scrutiny than a traditional IPO.
- Hindenburg's short-seller report exposed the discrepancies, and regulators followed with fraud charges.
The lesson
A demo that misrepresents the product is not marketing — it is fraud. Nikola's downhill video was the metaphor: momentum without power.
Aftermath
Milton was sentenced to four years in prison. Nikola continued operating under new leadership, attempting to deliver on its hydrogen truck vision. The case contributed to increased scrutiny of SPAC listings and founder claims in the EV sector.
