What happened
On 22 July 2026, Nike formally notified its two largest Chinese distributors — Topsports (滔搏) and Pou Sheng (宝胜) — that their online sales rights for Nike products in mainland China would terminate on 1 January 2027. The notice covered thousands of online storefronts across Tmall, JD.com and Douyin. Topsports, Nike's partner of 27 years, saw its online Nike business — roughly 22% of total revenue — marked for elimination overnight.
The purge was the sharpest move yet in Nike's global direct-to-consumer strategy, which since 2017 had aimed to reclaim distribution margins and customer data by cutting intermediaries. In China, the rationale was to rebuild a digital ecosystem centred on Nike's own website, app and official flagship stores. But the timing looked less like strategic confidence than distress: Greater China had been Nike's weakest region, and the brand's market share was eroding against Anta and Li-Ning.
The market's verdict was swift. Topsports shares fell roughly 25% on 22 July, wiping out a partnership that had helped Nike navigate China's fragmented e-commerce landscape for nearly three decades. Offline retail cooperation continued, but the online relationship — the growth engine — was over.
Nike's gamble: a brand-owned digital experience in Tmall, JD and Douyin can replace what a distributed network of thousands of authorised sellers spent 27 years building. The brand's own app has never been a top-10 shopping destination in China.
What it cost
Nike cut thousands of online distributors in China, ending a 27-year Topsports partnership, and Topsports stock fell 25% in a day.
Why it happened
Nike assumed owning the customer relationship would lift spend, but China's consumers discover brands through influencers, livestreams and multi-brand stores — not brand-owned apps.
Severing distributors came after years of DTC push that had not reversed China market-share losses to Anta and Li-Ning — the strategy was already failing before the purge accelerated it.
China's e-commerce is fragmented across Tmall, JD, Douyin and Pinduoduo, each with distinct traffic mechanics a centralised brand operation cannot match at distributor scale.
The abrupt termination of a 27-year partnership signalled to the broader retail ecosystem that Nike would sacrifice partner value for strategic control, risking long-term relationship capital.
The lesson
Going direct-to-consumer in a fragmented market means replacing a distributed network you did not build — the middleman earned its margin by managing a chaos your headquarters cannot replicate.
Aftermath
Topsports began aggressive discounting of Nike inventory after the notice. Nike appointed Greater China's first local product innovation vice-president, signalling a belated recognition that DTC requires local product decisions, not just channel control. Whether the brand-owned channel can replace 27 years of distributed retail by January 2027 remains unproven.
