Mieru's men's-wear business died with the business suit — ¥1.2B bankruptcy
A Sendai men's casual-wear maker built on department stores and office dress filed for self-bankruptcy with ¥1.2B in debt as work styles changed.

What happened
Mieru Co. was a Sendai-based maker, wholesaler and retailer of men's casual and business wear. Founded in February 2002 and incorporated in October 2004, it manufactured and imported clothing, selling through department stores, large supermarkets, mass retailers, specialty shops, and around 30 of its own retail stores — a model built on business-dress demand and department-store foot traffic.
The pandemic changed the two things its model depended on at once. Remote work and shifting office dress codes cut wholesale demand for business attire, forced its retail stores to close or shorten hours, and the company slid into loss. The post-COVID policy of a very weak yen then pushed up the cost of imported goods, and inflation kept consumer spending down.
The final blow came in autumn 2025, when an unusually warm season left autumn merchandise unsold, tying up cash in inventory and worsening the funding squeeze. On August 19, 2025 Mieru filed for self-bankruptcy at the Sendai District Court with total liabilities of approximately ¥1.2 billion. Its related company, Mieru International, was also affected.
Why it happened
- Mieru's model was concentrated on business dress sold through department stores — two channels that lost customers to remote work and e-commerce at the same time.
- The weak yen raised import costs while the company could not pass them on in a falling market, squeezing margins it no longer had.
- A warm autumn left autumn goods unsold, freezing cash in inventory just as the company was already in loss.
The lesson
A business built on business dress and department-store foot traffic is shorting two trends at once — when remote work and e-commerce both move against it, there is no floor to land on.
Aftermath
The Sendai District Court issued a bankruptcy order for Mieru on August 19, 2025 (Case No. (fu) 955/2025). Total liabilities at the time of shutdown were reported at approximately ¥1.1–1.2 billion. The court appointed lawyer Soga Yoichi as bankruptcy trustee; the creditor proof period closed September 24, 2025, and the meet-and-review date was set for December 2, 2025. The related company Mieru International was brought down in the same collapse.
