Microsoft will eliminate roughly 3,200 roles across Xbox in fiscal year 2027, with 1,600 jobs cut on the day of the announcement — one of the largest workforce reductions in video game industry history. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma laid out the plan in an internal letter titled 'Resetting Xbox', framing it bluntly: 'Our business today is not healthy. We are operating at margins that are 3-10x lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses' — and, by the letter's numbers, Xbox lost 64 cents for every dollar invested in a typical year.

Four studios will leave Xbox alongside the cuts: Double Fine and Compulsion Games will spin out as independents, Ninja Theory and Undead Labs are in talks to be sold, and Arkane is entering French Works Council consultation. No publicly announced first-party games are being cancelled in this round — Senua's Saga and State of Decay 3 are explicitly funded to completion under their new ownership arrangements. Helen Chiang was promoted to a newly created Chief Operating Officer role, and Dave McCarthy is retiring after 17 years at Xbox.

Roughly 3,200 roles cut across fiscal 2027 (1,600 immediately); Double Fine and Compulsion spin out, Ninja Theory and Undead Labs up for sale, Arkane in consultation.

The business was running at margins 3-10x lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses.

Xbox lost 64 cents for every dollar invested in a typical year, by its own leadership's account.

The studio roster assembled for the console ecosystem cost more to operate than the business could carry.

The reset shelters announced games while shedding the people and studios around them — the cheapest way to stop the losses.

Scaling on acquisitions is easy when capital is cheap and brutal to unwind when the margins show: studios bought as strategy became studios leaving the brand.

Half the 3,200 cuts took effect immediately, with the rest spread across fiscal 2027. Double Fine and Compulsion head for independence, Ninja Theory and Undead Labs are in sale talks, and Arkane is in consultation; Senua's Saga and State of Decay 3 will still ship, and Chiang takes the new COO role as McCarthy departs.
