Xbox's status page first reported the outage at about 11 p.m. ET on Sunday, July 26, 2026. Users could not sign in, launch apps or find games on the Xbox store; by morning the page added that users 'may have problems' playing digital and disc games. Posts on social media confirmed the worst part: games owned on physical disc would not boot either, and Game Pass titles threw error 0x87e107df, indicating the license could not be verified.

At 6:48 p.m. ET on July 27, Xbox confirmed the issues were mitigated: 'You should once again be able to launch games, sign in, and complete purchases. Thanks for sticking with us through a long one.' The status page showed all services up and running after what The Verge counted as almost a full day of disruption.

The Verge noted the episode showed the downside of a system that ties authentication requirements even to physical copies of games — weeks after reporter Tom Warren revealed Xbox was testing a feature granting users a digital copy of disc-owned games. The outage also landed in the same month as the major Xbox layoffs announced earlier in July.

For almost a full day owners could not sign in, launch apps, complete purchases or play games — including discs they physically owned (error 0x87e107df).

Playing any game, digital or disc, required a license check against Xbox servers, so a backend failure locked out entire libraries.

Disc authentication had no local fallback, although the discs were physically in owners' hands.

The failure hit sign-in, store and purchases at once, showing how much of the console experience hung on one always-online path.

If even physical media needs a server's blessing, your outage radius equals your whole library — authentication needs a path that works offline.

Microsoft mitigated the outage on the evening of July 27, 2026 and said all services were back. The company continues testing digital-copy grants for disc owners, a partial hedge — but the incident stood as a demonstration that owned physical media on Xbox still depends on the cloud.
