Quest Pro: Meta's $1,500 headset, dead in two years

Meta priced the Quest Pro at $1,500 for a future that wasn't there; it was discontinued in early 2025 after a $16.1B Reality Labs loss in 2023.

What happened

Meta launched the Quest Pro in October 2022 at $1,499.99 — a premium mixed-reality headset with eye and face tracking, positioned as the bridge to the metaverse and a work device for the 'prosumer'. Zuckerberg sold it as the future of computing; the market treated it as a very expensive VR toy.

Sales never justified the price. Meta cut the price to $1,099.99 in March 2023, then to $999.99 in July 2023 — an effective one-third discount within nine months. By then the Quest 3, at $499.99 with most of the same mixed-reality features, had made the Pro's positioning indefensible.

Meta quietly discontinued the Quest Pro in October 2024 and confirmed in early January 2025 that remaining stock was the last; it was formally discontinued on 6 January 2025. The headset's two-year run ended inside a Reality Labs division that lost $16.1 billion in 2023 alone.

Why it happened

  • The price assumed a market that did not exist: $1,499.99 for a work headset nobody's office asked for, while the consumer Quest 2 cost $399.
  • Meta shipped the Quest 3 eighteen months later at one-third the price with the same mixed-reality capability, destroying the Pro's reason to exist.
  • The product chased the metaverse narrative instead of a customer — eye tracking and face tracking were demos, not jobs anyone was willing to pay for.

The lesson

Meta priced the Quest Pro at $1,500 for a metaverse that nobody wanted, then shipped its $499 replacement. A flagship with no customer is a subsidy — for a company spending $16B a year on the bet.

Aftermath

Meta officially ended Quest Pro sales in early January 2025 and never shipped a successor at that price point; the Reality Labs division refocused on the cheaper Quest 3 line and Ray-Ban smart glasses, which outsold the Pro within months. The Pro stands as the most expensive headset Meta ever sold and the shortest-lived Quest product.
