McBride linked thalidomide to birth defects — then fabricated data to repeat it

What happened
William McBride, an Australian obstetrician, published a letter in The Lancet in December 1961 linking the drug thalidomide to birth defects — one of the first published warnings about the drug's teratogenic effects. His observation was correct and contributed to the withdrawal of thalidomide, saving countless lives.
But McBride's later career was marred by research fraud. In the 1980s, he published studies on the effects of the drug Debendox (doxylamine) on birth defects. An investigation found that McBride had fabricated and manipulated data in these studies. He was struck from the medical register in 1988.
The case was a tragic paradox: a researcher who had made a genuine and important discovery destroyed his own credibility through fraud. McBride's thalidomide warning was valid and heroic; his later fabrication was inexcusable.
