What happened

Mahindra & Mahindra was founded in 1945 in Mumbai as Mahindra & Mohammed, a steel trading company. The partners were brothers Jagdish Chandra Mahindra and Keshub Mahindra, along with Malik Ghulam Muhammad. The company began by importing steel and later received a license to assemble Willys Jeeps in India, marking the start of the automotive business.

In 1948, following the partition of India, Malik Ghulam Muhammad decided to move to the newly formed Pakistan. The Mahindra brothers were left with a company stamp and stationery that already said 'M&M' (Mahindra & Mohammed). They did not have the financial resources to buy new stationery and reprint the name. Their solution was to rename the company from Mahindra & Mohammed to Mahindra & Mahindra — keeping the 'M&M' abbreviation.

The company built the automotive business into a major manufacturer. By the 1960s, Mahindra & Mahindra was producing utility vehicles and tractors. The company expanded into financial services, technology, and hospitality. Mahindra Tractors became the world's largest tractor manufacturer by volume. The Mahindra Group became one of India's largest conglomerates.

By 2026, Mahindra & Mahindra reported revenue of Rs 203,175 crore (US$21 billion). The company produced 594,000 passenger vehicles and sold over 200,000 tractors annually. The company that was renamed because of a stationery cost became one of India's most valuable brands. The 'M&M' that was meant for a different company became the symbol of a $21 billion enterprise.

Why it happened

  • Mahindra & Mahindra was originally Mahindra & Mohammed. When co-founder Malik Ghulam Muhammad moved to Pakistan in 1948, the company was left with stationery that said 'M&M.'
  • The company did not have the money to buy new stationery. So they renamed the company to Mahindra & Mahindra — keeping the 'M&M' that was already printed.
  • Mahindra & Mahindra became India's largest SUV manufacturer and the world's largest tractor manufacturer by volume. A stationery cost accidentally shaped a $21 billion brand.
