What happened
Speaking at a Virgin Atlantic event in December 2019, Mahindra & Mahindra chairman Anand Mahindra admitted that entering the commuter bike segment more than a decade earlier 'was a failure on the part of the group'. The group had bought Kinetic Motors in July 2008 and relaunched its bikes as 'Mojo', but never made a mark in an entry-model market dominated by Hero MotoCorp and Honda with about two-thirds of 21.2 million units a year. In FY19 Mahindra sold 4,004 units, down 73 per cent — behind everyone but Kawasaki's 3,115, per SIAM data.
'We knew our dream well and we had the right things, but how to win is where we went wrong. We should have never gone to the commuter bike side,' Mahindra said. He had entered with confidence built on ecosystem knowledge, distribution, R&D and brand positioning — assets that did not translate to a price-first segment. Terming failure as 'capital', he said the commuter episode's product-failure lessons led the group into premium two-wheelers, where he claimed success: Jawa, brought in a year earlier, had buyers waiting five months, and the acquired BSA brand was queued for launch.
What it cost
FY19 volumes collapsed 73% to 4,004 units — behind even Kawasaki — in a 21.2-million-unit market owned by Hero and Honda.
Why it happened
It attacked the volume core of the market, where Hero's and Honda's scale made an upstart's costs unbeatable.
The confidence case — ecosystem, distribution, R&D, brand — was real but transferred poorly to commuters who buy on price.
The conclusion took a decade to state publicly, during which the unit shrank to a rounding error.
The lesson
Enter segments where your actual advantages compound, not where the volume is: the right dream on the wrong battlefield is still a decade lost.
Aftermath
Mahindra's two-wheeler business refocused on premium bikes — Jawa with reported five-month waits, BSA lined up for launch — and the chairman reframed the failed segment as 'capital': the tuition paid for the pivot.
