What happened
L'Oréal Group is shutting down its localized Hong Kong direct-to-consumer e-commerce operations for seven major brands. The official Hong Kong brand websites will cease operations on August 18, 2026. Affected brands are Lancôme, Yves Saint Laurent, Giorgio Armani, Aesop, Kiehl's, Shu Uemura and Helena Rubinstein.
Customers are redirected to the brands' Tmall flagship stores, physical retail counters, or department store shelves in Hong Kong. L'Oréal cites three pressures: cross-border e-commerce from mainland China platforms has made localized HK brand websites redundant; Hong Kong's 7.4 million people cannot support the operating cost of seven separate e-commerce storefronts; and consumer flows have shifted toward mainland platforms and physical stores.
The decision follows a 2025 restructuring of L'Oréal's Hong Kong office that reportedly laid off over 200 employees and merged the Hong Kong division into mainland China operations. L'Oréal is not exiting Hong Kong — it is consolidating its digital presence onto Alibaba's Tmall, a platform that already serves the same customers better than seven standalone websites.
Why it happened
- Hong Kong's population of 7.4 million cannot efficiently support seven independent e-commerce storefronts with dedicated logistics, marketing and customer service
- Cross-border e-commerce from mainland China, especially Tmall, already serves Hong Kong consumers with better pricing and faster logistics, making localized brand websites redundant
- L'Oréal's consolidation mirrors the broader industry trend of global beauty brands abandoning standalone e-commerce in smaller markets in favor of platform-based channels
The lesson
A standalone DTC website was essential in 2015. In 2025, if Alibaba already serves your customers, running your own store is just a cost centre.
