What happened
Lep' was a Vietnamese women's fashion brand founded in 2016 by Nguyễn Ngọc Trâm, a 9x (1990s-born) entrepreneur. The brand grew to 17 stores across Vietnam's three regions, occupying prime high-street locations in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. It was known for floral dresses and feminine designs, and had built a loyal customer base over eight years.
The company behind Lep', Au Couture Fashion Joint Stock Company, had raised its registered capital from 200 million VND to 20 billion VND through four rounds, with the founding couple holding the majority of shares. Despite the brand's popularity, the market was changing rapidly: fast fashion, e-commerce platforms and cheaper alternatives were reshaping Vietnamese consumer preferences.
On the evening of November 14, 2024, Nguyễn Ngọc Trâm posted a heartfelt letter on the brand's Facebook page announcing the closure of the entire system. She said the brand could no longer keep up with the pace of the market. All stores closed on November 30, 2024, with dresses liquidated at a maximum of 499,000 VND. The closure was part of a wave of Vietnamese local fashion brands shutting down in 2024–2025 amid what analysts described as an exhausted market.
Why it happened
- Lep' collections lost their identity over time — designs became outdated and failed to keep pace with rapidly shifting consumer tastes.
- The rise of fast fashion and e-commerce platforms offered cheaper, trendier alternatives that Lep' could not compete with on price or speed.
- The brand's prime high-street store network was expensive to maintain, and declining foot traffic made the economics unsustainable.
- The founder acknowledged the brand could no longer 'keep up with the market's relentless pace' — a structural problem shared across Vietnamese local fashion.
The lesson
A brand's store network can become a liability when the market shifts — physical retail creates fixed costs that outlast consumer relevance.
Aftermath
Lep' joined a wave of Vietnamese local fashion brands that closed in 2024, including Catsa (22 stores), Elpis (10 years), and MIEU (14 years). The closures were widely covered in Vietnamese media as a reckoning for locally-made fashion brands facing competition from fast fashion and e-commerce platforms.
