Keurig recalled 7 million Mini Plus brewers after 200 hot-water sprays

What happened
Keurig's MINI Plus Brewing System, model K10 (previously sold as model B31), could overheat the water inside it during brewing and spray it out through the top of the machine instead of into the cup, burning whoever stood in front of it.
By the time Keurig and the CPSC announced a recall on December 23, 2014, the company had logged at least 90 reports of burn injuries and about 200 reports of water spraying unexpectedly from the machine. The recall covered roughly 6.6 million brewers in the US and 564,000 in Canada, bought before July 2014.
Keurig offered a free repair kit to registered owners rather than a refund or replacement, addressing the overheating fault without recalling the brewer itself from service.
Why it happened
- A brewing system that could overheat water and spray it at the user shipped for years before the volume of burn reports forced a recall.
- The remedy was a repair kit mailed to whoever registered for it, not a mandatory return — leaving unregistered units with the same fault still in kitchens.
The lesson
Two hundred reports of unexpected spraying and it still took ninety burns before the recall — a coffee maker that scalds its owner is a defect long before the injury count makes headlines.
Aftermath
Keurig later paid a $5.8 million CPSC civil penalty related to reporting delays tied to a separate product, part of a broader pattern of regulatory scrutiny over how the company handled hazard reports across its brewer lines.
