What happened
Jinro Group was founded on October 3, 1924, and grew into Korea's dominant soju producer, with a 24-company conglomerate spanning soju, whisky, beer, food, cosmetics, construction, logistics, and retail. It was ranked 24th among Korean chaebols by 1996.
On April 21, 1997, Jinro defaulted on its obligations, unable to service the debt from its aggressive expansion. Six core affiliates including Jinro and Jinro Comprehensive Food entered court receivership in March 1998. The group sold Jinro Coors Beer to OB Beer in 1999 and its whisky division to Pernod Ricard in 2000.
Jinro was delisted from the Korea Exchange in 2003 and the group formally dissolved. The soju brand survived — acquired by Hite Brewery in 2005 to form HiteJinro — but the rest of the conglomerate was liquidated. Jinro Comprehensive Food went bankrupt in 2000 and closed in 2006. Jinro Distribution liquidated in 2000 and closed in 2010.
Why it happened
- Diversification into unrelated businesses — construction, logistics, cosmetics, retail — created a debt load that the core soju business could not support.
- The Asian Financial Crisis in 1997 cut off the credit markets that the group relied on to service its expansion debt.
- Jinro acquired or established 24 affiliate companies without the operational discipline to make each one self-sustaining.
- The group's debt structure assumed continued growth and easy credit, with no buffer for an economic downturn.
The lesson
A dominant brand in one category does not provide a licence to expand into unrelated industries. The cash flow of the core business cannot support an unrelated conglomerate structure built on debt.
Aftermath
Jinro was delisted from the Korea Exchange in 2003. The soju brand was acquired by Hite Brewery in 2005 to form HiteJinro, which continues today. Jinro Comprehensive Food went bankrupt in 2000 and closed in 2006. Jinro Distribution liquidated in 2000 and closed in 2010. The whisky division was sold to Pernod Ricard. The group that once ranked 24th among Korean chaebols was completely dismantled.
