Jeanswest dressed Australia for 53 years — then closed every store in one administration

Founded in Perth in 1972, Jeanswest survived its first administration in 2020. The second, in March 2025, closed all 90 stores and put 600 jobs on the line.

What happened

Jeanswest was founded in Perth in 1972 and grew into one of Australia's most recognisable casual-fashion chains, dressing a generation in denim and basics. At its peak it had stores in shopping centres across the country. By the 2020s the brand was struggling: foot traffic was falling, discretionary spending was shrinking, and the cost-of-living squeeze was pushing customers toward cheaper alternatives.

The first administration came in January 2020, driven by the COVID-19 shutdown. A Hong Kong-based company, Harbour Guidance, bought the brand and attempted a turnaround. The rescue lasted five years. In March 2025 Jeanswest entered voluntary administration for the second time, with Pitcher Partners appointed as administrator. All 90 stores were marked for closure; roughly 600 jobs were affected.

The brand may continue as an online operation, but the physical chain that had been a fixture of Australian shopping centres for over half a century was over. Jeanswest's second administration proved what the first had suggested: a rescue buys time, but it does not buy a new business model.

Why it happened

  • The brand's core customer — shopping-centre foot traffic buying mid-priced basics — was shrinking as retail moved online.
  • The 2020 rescue by Harbour Guidance preserved the store network without solving the structural decline in physical retail.
  • Cost-of-living pressure in 2024–2025 pushed discretionary spending down, and Jeanswest had no premium or value positioning to fall back on.
  • A 53-year-old brand carries legacy costs — leases, staffing, supply chains — that a digital-native competitor does not.

The lesson

A rescue preserves the company but not the market it served. Jeanswest survived COVID only to discover that the shopping centre it depended on was not coming back.
