What happened
Instant Pot's budget Gem 65 8-in-1 multicooker, sold mainly at Walmart, could overheat and melt on its underside because of a manufacturer defect, posing a fire hazard.
Double Insight, the Canadian importer, received 107 reports of overheating, five of which caused minor property damage. No injuries were reported.
About 104,000 units sold at Walmart between August 2017 and January 2018 for about $80 were recalled for a full refund. A defect in the cheapest rung of a beloved brand showed that a discount line carries the same name as the flagship.
Why it happened
- A manufacturer defect caused the multicooker to overheat and melt, posing a fire hazard
- 107 reports of overheating and five instances of minor property damage
- About 104,000 units sold at Walmart recalled for a full refund
The lesson
A budget line wears the same brand name, so a defect in it damages the whole name. Instant Pot's Gem 65 overheated and melted in 107 reports before 104,000 units were pulled from Walmart.
