What happened
iFIT Inc., the company formerly known as Icon Health & Fitness, sold ProForm Rapid Strike 50 Lb Adjustable Dumbbell Sets, model PAMSDB20, from October 2023 to July 2024. The sets adjust from 5 to 50 pounds in 5-pound steps with a manual selection pin while the weights nest in a molded plastic tray.
In a joint recall with Health Canada and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, announced on 25 July 2024, iFIT said the weight plates may dislodge from the handle during use because of a misalignment in the base of the tray, posing a risk of injury. As of 22 July 2024 it had no reports in Canada; in the US it had 8 reports of plates dislodging and 3 of injuries, including contusions and abrasions.
iFIT reported selling 651 sets in Canada and 54,400 in the US, about 55,000 in total. The dumbbells are manufactured in Taiwan.
What it cost
About 55,000 sets recalled (651 in Canada, 54,400 in the US); 8 US reports of dislodging plates and 3 injuries; free replacement tray for every owner.
Why it happened
A misalignment in the molded tray's base let weight plates come off the handle during use.
The failure sat in the tray, a plastic part, rather than in the metal plates or handle, so only the tray needed replacing.
The sets were sold from October 2023 and recalled in July 2024, so every unit sold carried the tray flaw.
The lesson
In an adjustable-weight product the base is a safety part, not packaging; an alignment error in a plastic tray can drop the weights.
Aftermath
Owners were told to stop using the dumbbells and contact iFIT for a free replacement molded tray. Under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act the recalled sets cannot be redistributed, sold or given away in Canada.
