Hyundai, Kia and Genesis ICCUs keep failing and leaving EVs without drive power

The charging control unit that also runs the 12V system fails and depletes the battery; a 2024 recall and a 2026 class action share the same defect.

What happened

The Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) in Hyundai, Kia and Genesis electric vehicles charges the 12-volt auxiliary battery and powers low-voltage equipment. Under certain electrical loads its internal power transistor can fail, blowing a fuse and leaving the 12V battery uncharged; as it drains, the car enters a fail-safe mode that gradually cuts drive power until the vehicle stops.

Hyundai launched recall 24V-868 in 2024 covering the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6, with separate Kia and Genesis campaigns covering the EV6, GV60 and Electrified GV70/GV80. The fix was a software update plus inspection and possible replacement of the ICCU and fuse.

The problem did not stay fixed. Owners reported repeat 12V drain, limp mode, total power loss and dashboard warnings, and some replacement units were alleged to be as defective as the originals. In April 2026 a class action was filed in New Jersey against Hyundai, Kia, Genesis and supplier Hyundai Kefico over the recurring failures.

The decision under review is the ICCU design itself: a single component that both manages charging and keeps the whole low-voltage system alive, with a failure mode that turns the vehicle into a brick and required a years-long recall campaign rather than a one-shot fix.
