What happened
On May 18, 2026 Hyundai recalled 421,078 vehicles — 2025-26 Tucson, Tucson Hybrid, Tucson PHEV and Santa Cruz models — after a front camera software defect caused unexpected automatic braking with no obstacle ahead.
Hyundai learned of the issue in January 2025. By the filing it had received 376 driver reports and was aware of at least four rear-end crashes attributed to the phantom braking, with four reported injuries.
The fix is a free camera software update. Owner notification letters are scheduled for July 17, 2026 (NHTSA campaign 26V316, internal number 302).
