Hiratsuka, a 53-year-old bag maker, went under as its market shrank

What happened
Hiratsuka was a women's handbag and handmade-bag manufacturer and retailer founded in 1973, running a shop-plus-factory in Kawasaki Town, Miyagi Prefecture. It made and sold its own bags, a small regional maker in an industry that was quietly shrinking nationwide.
Sales slid for decades against the broad decline of the Japanese bag industry. The company peaked at about ¥379 million in the fiscal year ending May 1998, then shrank to about ¥22 million in the fiscal year ending May 2024 — roughly one seventeenth of the peak — and booked an operating loss of about ¥10 million in that final year.
The owner tried to consolidate: in May 2022 the business was pulled together at the Kawasaki Town shop-and-factory, closing other locations to cut costs. The move did not recover sales. The company stopped business on 21 March 2025, and on 17 April 2026 the Sendai District Court's Oogawara branch ordered bankruptcy proceedings to begin, with liabilities of about ¥91 million.
Why it happened
- The domestic bag market shrank for decades, and a small regional maker had no channel or brand strong enough to grow against it.
- The 2022 consolidation into a single shop-and-factory cut costs but did nothing to fix the falling demand that was the real problem.
- By the time the losses were acknowledged, retained value was gone and liabilities around ¥91 million left no room to restructure.
The lesson
Consolidating a shrinking business cuts the cost of decline, not the decline itself. When the market is shrinking, folding locations only buys time unless the brand finds a new reason to be bought.
Aftermath
Hiratsuka stopped business on 21 March 2025 and was ordered into bankruptcy by the Sendai District Court's Oogawara branch on 17 April 2026, with liabilities of about ¥91 million. It is one of many small Japanese bag makers that have closed as the industry contracted over recent decades.
