Harajuku Cassidy survived 45 years of fashion — then its building gave out

An American-casual select shop founded in Harajuku in 1981, Cassidy closes at the end of January 2026 — its building is aging out from under it.

What happened

Harajuku Cassidy opened in 1981 in Jingumae 6-chome, in the heart of Harajuku — an American-casual select shop that grew into a fixture of the district's fashion streets. Over forty-five years it outlasted every trend wave that passed through Harajuku, holding onto customers who had first shopped there as students.

The end came not from the register but from the walls. On 29 December 2025 the shop announced on its blog that it would close at the end of January 2026, due to the aging of its building. The final day was 25 January 2026 — a farewell of under a month, with one last sale in early January.

The closure notice carried no talk of revival or relocation — only thanks for decades of support. What Harajuku lost was one of its long-running old-guard select shops: a store that had outlived the trends, but not the building that held them.

Why it happened

  • The building itself had reached the end of its life — no lease or loyalty could repair that.
  • A one-month wind-down: long-running retail institutions rarely get to choose how they end.
  • There was no relocation plan; the shop was its corner of Harajuku, and the corner was done.

The lesson

A shop can outlast every trend and still lose to its own address: Harajuku Cassidy ran American casual for 45 years, then the building's aging ended it on a month's notice.

Aftermath

The store at Jingumae 6-6-4 closed on 25 January 2026. No relocation or revival was announced; the shop's blog closed with thanks to its customers.
