Charles Goodyear's rubber-sulfur mix fell on a hot stove — and changed the world
Goodyear spent five years trying to stabilize rubber. In 1839, sulfur-rubber fell on a hot stove. It charred — and stayed flexible. He called it vulcanization.

What happened
Charles Goodyear was a self-taught chemist who had been trying to stabilize natural rubber since 1834. Raw rubber was useless for most applications — it melted in heat and cracked in cold. He had experimented with magnesia, nitric acid, lime, and dozens of other additives, but nothing worked. His family nearly starved from the money he spent on experiments, and he was jailed for debt multiple times.
In 1839, while visiting a general store in Woburn, Massachusetts, Goodyear was demonstrating his latest sulfur-treated rubber. When locals laughed at him, he gesticulated with the lump of sulfur-rubber mixture. Some of it flew onto the surface of a hot potbellied stove. Instead of melting, the rubber charred — and when he scraped it off, he found it had become tough and flexible. The heat was the missing element.
Goodyear spent five more years perfecting the process through pressure steaming. He named it 'vulcanization' after Vulcan, the Roman god of fire. He was granted US Patent 3,633 on June 15, 1844. The process made rubber pliable, waterproof, moldable, and stable across temperatures — solving the problem that had frustrated inventors for decades.
Despite the discovery, Goodyear never profited. His patents were widely infringed, and he spent most of his money in court. He was imprisoned in a French debtor's prison in 1855 while demonstrating at the Exposition Universelle. He died on July 1, 1860, in New York City, with $200,000 in debt. The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, founded in 1898, was named in his honor — he had no connection to it. Vulcanized rubber enabled the modern rubber industry, from tires to medical equipment to countless industrial applications.
