Good Light Cosmetics, a queer K-beauty brand, closed after 5 years — outrun by the boom
David Yi launched Good Light in 2021 with a message of inclusion. By 2026, cheaper viral competitors and 25% tariffs made the business unsustainable.

What happened
Good Light Cosmetics was founded by David Yi, a Korean-American journalist who had built Very Good Light, an online magazine about gender-inclusive beauty. In March 2021, Yi launched Good Light as a K-beauty skincare brand with a mission of 'Beauty Beyond the Binary' — queer-inclusive, genderless skincare. The debut line included a cleanser, a milky toner, and a serum. The brand was one of the few indie K-beauty lines to secure distribution at Ulta Beauty, starting in 400 doors and eventually expanding to full-chain distribution.
The K-beauty boom that Good Light rode also became its undoing. The category exploded with viral brands backed by millions in marketing spend, selling at prices Good Light could not match. Tariffs on imported goods rose to 25%, and competitors could launch new products for less than Good Light's packaging cost. Yi's co-founder left in 2024, leaving Yi to rebuild the business with a new team. They haggled for better costs, negotiated terms, and after two years the business had grown threefold and was finally profitable — but it was too late.
On February 23, 2026, Yi published a first-person essay on Allure announcing that Good Light would close in April 2026. He wrote that the brand could not secure further funding, that 'love alone couldn't outrun capital,' and that the human cost of continuing to compete was too high. The brand's message of inclusion had been drowned out by a profit-driven, hyper-consumer beauty industry that had turned K-beauty from a niche into a commodity.
Why it happened
- The K-beauty category exploded with viral competitors backed by millions in marketing spend, turning Good Light from a unique brand into a commodity it could not differentiate.
- Tariffs on imported goods rose to 25%, and competitors could launch products cheaper than Good Light's packaging cost — the brand's cost structure was built for a different market.
- The co-founder departed in 2024, forcing Yi to rebuild the business mid-flight and losing momentum at a critical time.
- Despite reaching profitability after restructuring, the brand could not secure the funding needed to compete at scale — 'love alone couldn't outrun capital.'
The lesson
A brand that rides a trend must build a moat before the trend becomes a commodity. Mission alone is not enough when competitors outspend and undercut you.
Aftermath
Good Light Cosmetics ceased operations in April 2026. David Yi continued to run Very Good Light, the gender-inclusive beauty media platform he founded before Good Light. The brand's closure was covered by Allure, BeautyMatter, and E! Online, with Yi's first-person essay serving as the primary account.
