Godfreys sold vacuums for 93 years — Amazon and the cost of living closed it in a season
Founded in the Depression, one of the world's biggest vacuum retailers. In January 2024: administration, 54 stores gone; by March, all of them.

What happened
Godfrey Cohen opened the first Godfreys in Melbourne in 1931, in the middle of the Depression, and built it into one of the world's largest specialist vacuum retailers: 141 company stores across Australia and New Zealand, another 28 run by franchisees, and a name that meant the category. It listed on the ASX in late 2014 and was taken private again four years later.
The single-category specialist is a format the internet was built to kill: a customer who knows the model number does not need advice, and Amazon, Kogan and the big electronics chains sold the same machines without the rent and the staff. Cost-of-living pressure cut the trade-up purchases — the premium vacuums that carried the margins — and operating costs rose. On 30 January 2024, PwC partners were appointed voluntary administrators; 54 stores were to close within a fortnight and 193 staff were laid off.
The administrators hoped to sell a restructured business as a going concern. By March 2024 the answer was in: Godfreys would close permanently. A chain that had survived the Depression, nine decades of retail change and the arrival of the bagless vacuum did not survive the combination of a marketplace competitor and a customer with less to spend. The expertise was real; the format charging for it was not.
Why it happened
- A single-category specialist sells advice and range; online retail sells the same model numbers cheaper, and the customer who knows what they want stops paying for the shop.
- Premium products carry specialist retail's margins — when cost-of-living pressure pushes buyers down the range, the store's economics break before its sales do.
- The 2018 delisting removed the market's daily verdict but not the market; four years later the verdict arrived all at once.
The lesson
Specialist retail survives on what the product cannot explain itself — once the category is a model number and a price, the margin has to move to service the internet cannot ship.
