What happened
FGS Ingredients Ltd is a UK-based ingredients supplier whose mustard powder and mustard-related products were used by multiple food manufacturers and retailers. In late September and October 2024, the company discovered that some of its mustard ingredients had become contaminated with peanuts, an allergen not declared on the labels of the finished products.
Because peanut allergy can cause severe reactions, the Food Standards Agency and Food Standards Scotland issued allergy alerts. The recall quickly expanded to more than 45 products sold under brand names including Spar, Clayton Park, Jack's, Fazilas and Carlos Takeaway, covering sandwiches, wraps, salads, dips and sandwich fillers sold in convenience stores and supermarkets.
FGS Ingredients halted distribution, recalled the affected lines, advised retailers to display point-of-sale notices, and offered refunds to consumers. The incident became one of the largest UK allergen recalls of 2024 and prompted the FSA to publish consumer guidance on mustard ingredients and peanut contamination.
Why it happened
- Mustard powder shared production or storage lines with peanut-containing materials without adequate allergen segregation
- The contaminated ingredient was supplied to many downstream customers, so one control failure multiplied into dozens of brand recalls

Aftermath
The recall broadened to cover more than 45 products across several retail brands. The FSA and Food Standards Scotland kept updating the alert into November 2024 and later issued guidance on peanut contamination in mustard ingredients.
