A ¥884m tax fine emptied Fan Bingbing's brand roster
Jiangsu's tax bureau fined Fan Bingbing about ¥884m; she lost most of her roughly 127 endorsements and was banned from acting in China.

What happened
Fan Bingbing was China's biggest star in 2018 — a red-carpet fixture with a reported 127 brand endorsements and a string of Hollywood cameos. In late September 2018 she disappeared from public view for weeks, and on 3 October the Jiangsu tax bureau delivered its verdict: she and her companies had used 'yin-yang' split contracts to hide income, and she owed about 884 million yuan — roughly US$130 million — in overdue taxes, interest and fines, including more than 596 million yuan in fines for tax evasion.
The judgment cost her the asset that made her famous: her endorsements. Montblanc explicitly confirmed she was no longer its spokesperson, and a majority of the roughly 127 brands she had worked with — including Louis Vuitton and Guerlain — dropped her as the news landed. Her seven-year run as the face of Chinese luxury and beauty collapsed within weeks.
She issued a public apology on Weibo, admitted breaking the law and said she would accept the penalty. The regulator also barred her from acting and producing in China, effectively ending the career the endorsements had paid for.
Why it happened
- An official tax judgment is unarguable in China: the Jiangsu bureau's penalty was the news, and no luxury brand wanted its face on a headline about ¥884m of evasion
- Fan was the endorsement itself — the 127-brand portfolio was built on her name, so the penalty struck the brands and the career at once
- Montblanc confirming the split openly showed the direction of travel: once one house said it outright, the rest followed rather than be last
- The ban on acting sealed it: a brand face who cannot work in China is not a face anyone pays to keep
The lesson
Fan Bingbing was 127 endorsements made flesh; one tax judgment and a ban on acting dissolved the portfolio in weeks. A single brand face can lose everything overnight.
Aftermath
Montblanc confirmed Fan Bingbing was no longer its spokesperson and a majority of her roughly 127 brands dropped her, with luxury houses including Louis Vuitton and Guerlain among those receding from her public profile. She paid the 884 million yuan (US$130 million) penalty and issued a public apology on Weibo admitting she had broken the law. The authorities also barred her from acting and producing in China, and her career went quiet for years before an eventual, much-diminished return.
