Conair's curling iron handle could come apart and expose live wire
Conair's ceramic curling irons had a handle that could separate mid-use, exposing the line cord and risking shock — 322,000 units were recalled.

What happened
Conair's ceramic, gold-matte-finish curling irons — sold with 1, 1¼ or 1½ inch barrels, a metal counter rest and a heat dial running 0 to 30 — had a handle that could come apart during ordinary use, exposing the line cord inside.
An exposed line cord on a device meant to be held in a bathroom, often near water, posed a shock or electrocution hazard. The recall covered units with date codes from November 2005 through July 2006.
On February 7, 2007, Conair and the CPSC recalled about 322,000 of the curling irons, telling consumers to stop using them immediately and contact Conair for the recall remedy.
Why it happened
- A handle that could separate during normal use, on a device that routinely operates near water and skin, exposed a live cord instead of containing it.
- The defect spanned roughly eight months of production before the recall, indicating the handle-separation risk wasn't caught in the product's own quality testing before shipping.
The lesson
A bathroom appliance with a handle that can expose live wiring failed at basic electrical containment — exactly the defect quality testing exists to catch before shipping.
Aftermath
Conair's 2007 recall addressed the handle-separation defect on the affected date-code range; the company continued selling curling irons under updated designs afterward.
