BUYON sourced Korean fashion for Japan for nine years — the weak yen ended it

Since 2016 BUYON let Japanese shops source from Dongdaemun and Namdaemun markets. On 30 December 2025 it shut: the yen's collapse made costs unsustainable.

What happened

BUYON Inc. launched its sourcing service in 2016, connecting Japanese apparel retailers directly with wholesalers in Seoul's Dongdaemun and Namdaemun markets. For a monthly subscription from ¥2,980, members got the whole local-sourcing chain handled: ordering, payment, pickup, item checking, temporary storage and consolidated shipping. Platform descriptions listed more than 4,300 wholesalers and 500,000 products.

The model was built on a bet that never got priced in: subscription revenue fixed in yen on one side, sourcing and logistics costs in won on the other. Global inflation and the yen's steep depreciation from 2022 flipped that bet — costs rose in yen terms while the fee structure stayed put.

On 30 December 2025, after nine and a half years, the company ended the service, saying the cost surge left it unable to continue stably. One of the pioneer platforms of Japan–Korea fashion sourcing closed not for lack of users but because the exchange rate moved against the model.

Why it happened

  • Revenue was yen-fixed while the cost base was won-denominated; when the yen fell, the margin structure inverted.
  • Subscription pricing for small buyers could not pass FX losses through fast enough to keep pace with the slide.
  • Korean-side inflation hit at the same time, squeezing the cost base from both directions.

The lesson

Cross-border sourcing carries FX risk inside its unit economics. Revenue priced in the falling currency, costs in the rising one — nine years ended with the exchange rate, not with demand.

Aftermath

BUYON Inc. continued its other Japan–Korea businesses, including the BUYpay e-commerce payment service, while members were moved through a closure schedule for final orders and procedures. Sourcing from Dongdaemun for Japanese buyers continues through rival services and direct travel.
