Burt's Bees left Taiwan after 25 years when its sole distributor ended the deal

One distributor carried Burt's Bees in Taiwan for 25 years — when that relationship ended, every physical counter closed at once.

What happened

Burt's Bees, the US natural personal-care brand founded in Maine in 1984, had sold in Taiwan for about 25 years through a single local distributor, Ping Heng Jia (平珩家). The brand built loyal customers on its natural-ingredient, no-preservative positioning.

In late March 2026, Ping Heng Jia announced on social media that it would end the distribution agreement effective April 1, closing every physical counter in Taiwan at once. The distributor framed the announcement emotionally, thanking customers for '25 ordinary but important days' with the brand, and ran a clearance sale on its own site down to 20% of list price.

Because Burt's Bees had never operated its own retail or online storefront in Taiwan, ending the single distributor relationship meant the brand had no other channel in the market and disappeared from Taiwan shelves overnight. The exit came in the same 2026 wave that saw FANCL, Origins, ADDICTION and Laura Mercier all shrink or leave Taiwan department-store counters.

Why it happened

  • A single-distributor structure with no direct retail meant the brand had no fallback channel when that one relationship ended — the market exit was total rather than gradual.
  • Natural personal-care lost shelf space to larger beauty conglomerates' owned brands and e-commerce platforms that could offer deeper promotions and loyalty programs the distributor could not match.
  • The clearance-sale farewell, however well received by loyal customers, was a liquidation event rather than a transition plan — nothing replaced the counters it vacated.

The lesson

A brand with one distributor for an entire market has no exit ramp if that relationship ends — it has an off switch. Diversify channels before a market matters, not after losing it.

Aftermath

Ping Heng Jia ran a clearance sale on Burt's Bees stock at discounts of up to 80% off; the brand had no other retail presence announced in Taiwan afterward.
