What happened

In December 2010, NASA held a press conference hyping the discovery of a bacterium from California's Mono Lake that could supposedly substitute arsenic for phosphorus in its DNA — a finding that would 'rewrite biology textbooks.' The announcement was preceded by intense media speculation, with NASA teasing a discovery that would 'impact the search for evidence of extraterrestrial life.'

The paper, published in Science on June 3, 2011, was met with immediate skepticism from microbiologists and chemists who pointed out fundamental flaws in the experimental design. Independent studies within 18 months refuted the core claim: GFAJ-1 was simply an arsenate-resistant organism scavenging trace phosphate from its environment. Eight technical comments accompanied the print publication, all criticizing the work.

The fallout was significant. Lead author Felisa Wolfe-Simon was effectively forced out of her research career and later worked as an oboe performer. NASA's credibility was damaged by the sensationalism of the announcement. Science journal waited 15 years to retract the paper, doing so in July 2025 with a note stating 'no evidence of misconduct' — the experiments simply did not support the conclusions.
