What happened

Apple unveiled the Vision Pro headset in June 2023 and put it on sale in February 2024 at $3,499 — its first entirely new hardware category in a decade. Early demand was strong, but it faded quickly: the price, the weight, and a thin app ecosystem left the device a niche product for developers and enthusiasts.

According to IDC data reported by the Financial Times, Apple's manufacturer Luxshare stopped producing the headset at the start of 2025. Apple scaled back manufacturing and marketing for the Vision Pro throughout 2025, cutting its marketing budget by as much as 95%.

IDC estimated Apple shipped just 45,000 Vision Pro units in the final quarter of 2025. Apple never published official sales figures and declined to comment on the reports. News reports said Apple paused work on a next-generation Vision Pro and shifted resources toward AI wearables such as smart glasses.

Why it happened

  • A $3,499 price tag confined the device to developers and early adopters — never a mass market, no matter how good the tech.
  • The ecosystem was thin: no killer app emerged that justified the price, so trial did not become repeat use.
  • Comfort problems (weight, eye- and hand-tracking fatigue) turned try-outs into no-sales at the demo stage.
  • Apple itself redirected resources to AI glasses, conceding that the spatial-computing line was not the near-term future.

The lesson

Vision Pro was a $3,499 headset with no killer app and real comfort problems. Apple's first new category in a decade went from launch hype to halted production in under two years.

Aftermath

Luxshare stopped production at the start of 2025; Apple cut Vision Pro marketing by as much as 95% through 2025, per the Financial Times. IDC put Q4 2025 shipments at 45,000 units. Apple reportedly paused work on a next-generation Vision Pro and shifted resources to AI wearables, with a cheaper Vision Pro variant said to remain in development.
