American Eagle closed its Japan stores for the second time

American Eagle's second Japan attempt lasted just over a year — two stores closed in January 2024, ending the brand's presence.

What happened

American Eagle Outfitters closed its two remaining Japan stores on January 28, 2024 — the Shibuya flagship and the Ikebukuro Pinnacle store — marking the brand's second withdrawal from the Japanese market. The first exit happened in 2019 when licensee Aoyama Shoji closed 33 stores nationwide.

The brand re-entered Japan in late 2022 with a direct-operated model, opening a flagship in Shibuya and later a second store in Ikebukuro. Unlike the licensed model used previously, American Eagle opted for direct operation this time, which gave it more control but also carried all the fixed costs. With only two stores and no economies of scale, the Japan business could not achieve profitability.

Japan's fast-fashion market was among the most competitive in the world, dominated by Uniqlo, GU, and Shein on price, and by local brands on style relevance. American Eagle's preppy American aesthetic struggled to find a niche — Japanese consumers had limited awareness of the brand relative to competitors with decades of local presence.

The brand continued to operate its Japanese e-commerce site after the store closures, but the physical retail exit signalled that the direct-operated model was not sustainable at the brand's level of awareness in Japan.

Why it happened

  • Operating just two stores in Japan's high-rent retail market created unsustainable fixed costs against the revenue two locations could generate.
  • American Eagle's brand awareness in Japan was too low to drive foot traffic to standalone stores without significant marketing investment.
  • The hyper-competitive Japanese fast-fashion market — dominated by Uniqlo, GU, and Shein — left no room for a mid-tier foreign brand with limited local relevance.

The lesson

A brand that failed once in a market rarely succeeds on re-entry with the same product and a smaller footprint — two stores cannot cover the cost of rebuilding what 33 lost.

Aftermath

American Eagle's two Japan stores — Shibuya flagship and Ikebukuro Pinnacle — closed on January 28, 2024. The Japanese e-commerce site continued operating, allowing online sales. The exit marked the brand's second complete withdrawal from Japan physical retail. American Eagle continued operations in the US, Canada, Mexico, and other international markets.
