Curetex (キュアテックス), Tokyo washi-fiber textile maker, bankrupt in 2026

Curetex spun scarves and socks from washi yarn — sales kept falling while ¥3.2B of borrowings squeezed it into a 2026 bankruptcy.

Curetex (株式会社キュアテックス) · 2026-05-15

What happened

Curetex was a Tokyo company that turned washi — Japanese paper — into yarn, and the yarn into scarves, socks and towels. It also made and sold paper-processing machinery and ran retail stores for washi fiber products with restaurants attached, a portfolio built since its founding in 2007.

The sales fell and the debt stayed. The company said revenue had declined for years as performance deteriorated, and a heavy load of borrowings squeezed cash flow until continuation was judged impossible.

The Tokyo District Court issued a bankruptcy commencement order on 15 May 2026, with liabilities of about ¥3.2 billion.

Why it happened

  • A niche product on a heavy balance sheet: washi yarn goods are a specialty line with a small market, and the machinery and retail businesses did not cover the borrowings that funded them.
  • Sales fell for years without a correction: the company watched revenue decline and kept the structure — and the debt — in place instead of shrinking or exiting earlier.
  • Diversification across unrelated lines: paper machinery, textile goods and restaurants share a balance sheet but not customers, so no single strength could carry the whole.

The lesson

Debt does not wait for a turnaround: Curetex's washi-yarn sales fell for years while ¥3.2B of borrowings tightened — the Tokyo court closed it in May 2026.

Aftermath

The Tokyo District Court issued a bankruptcy commencement order for Curetex on 15 May 2026, with liabilities of about ¥3.2 billion. The company, founded in 2007 and based in Setagaya, Tokyo, manufactured scarves, socks and towels from washi paper yarn, made and sold paper-processing machinery, and operated retail stores for washi fiber products with attached restaurants. Sales declined in recent years and performance deteriorated while large borrowings tightened cash flow, until the company judged continuation impossible. Reported 20 May 2026.
