What happened
Forme was founded in Imizu City, Toyama in 1994 and operated select shops of women's clothing under the FORME name, alongside franchise stores run for apparel makers. It expanded from Toyama into Fukui, Ishikawa and Nara, and sales peaked at about ¥1.66 billion in the fiscal year ending July 2012.
After the peak, the rise of fast fashion intensified price competition and sales kept falling. The company responded by closing unprofitable stores to survive, but performance did not improve: revenue shrank faster than costs, the balance sheet fell into excess liabilities and cash flow tightened.
On 17 July 2026 the Toyama District Court, Takaoka Branch, issued a bankruptcy commencement order. Total liabilities were estimated at about ¥490 million, ending a 32-year run across four prefectures.
Why it happened
- Fast fashion turned a regional select shop's curated assortment into an expensive version of the same goods, and the price war left no margin.
- Closing unprofitable stores was the only response: the chain cut its way down instead of changing what it sold or how, so revenue fell faster than costs.
- There was no pivot: the same format and assortment ran from the 2012 peak to 2026 while traffic moved to fast-fashion chains and online.
The lesson
Closing stores is a cost cut, not a strategy: Forme answered fast fashion by shrinking, never by changing the offer, and the chain cut itself down to bankruptcy.
Aftermath
The Toyama District Court, Takaoka Branch, issued a bankruptcy commencement order for Forme on 17 July 2026, with liabilities of about ¥490 million. The company, founded in 1994, had expanded select shops and franchise stores across Toyama, Fukui, Ishikawa and Nara before sales fell after the ¥1.66 billion peak in fiscal 2012.
