Amdefil and Owl's ¥1.1B sibling apparel wholesalers collapsed together
Two Tokyo apparel wholesalers run by the same founder — one in women's wear, one in men's — filed for bankruptcy on the same day.

What happened
Amdefil Co., Ltd. and Owl Co., Ltd. were a pair of Tokyo-based apparel wholesalers sharing the same founder and headquarters in Shibuya, Tokyo. Amdefil (founded 1975, incorporated August 1980, ¥15 million capital) specialized in women's and children's apparel wholesale, while Owl handled men's apparel wholesale from the same address with the same representative.
Amdefil's decline was driven by intensifying competition and a sharp drop in orders — peak revenue of approximately ¥1.2 billion fell to roughly ¥300 million by the fiscal year ending October 2020, a 75% decline. COVID-19 accelerated the collapse as retail customers slashed orders further.
On September 15, 2021, the Tokyo District Court ordered bankruptcy proceedings for both companies on the same day, with combined liabilities of approximately ¥1.1 billion — ¥600 million for Amdefil and ¥500 million for Owl.
Why it happened
- Amdefil's revenue fell from ¥1.2 billion to ¥300 million, a 75% decline that made the wholesale operation unsustainable — the same fixed costs spread across a fraction of the volume.
- Owl was entirely dependent on its parent/sibling Amdefil — when Amdefil failed, Owl had no independent business foundation to continue operating.
- With ¥15 million in capital against ¥600 million in debt, Amdefil had no financial buffer — the founder could not inject enough capital to save two companies simultaneously.
- The same-day dual bankruptcy shows how a group structure concentrates risk — two apparently separate companies collapse together when both depend on the same management and resources.
The lesson
A group of two sibling companies is only as strong as the weaker one — when the parent company collapses, the dependent subsidiary falls on the same day with no independent survival strategy.
Aftermath
Amdefil Co., Ltd. and Owl Co., Ltd. were ordered into bankruptcy proceedings by the Tokyo District Court on September 15, 2021, with combined liabilities of approximately ¥1.1 billion (¥600 million for Amdefil, ¥500 million for Owl). Both companies shared the same founder and headquarters in Shibuya, Tokyo. Attorney Kenichi Machida was appointed as bankruptcy trustee for both proceedings.
