Piaggio built a connected e-bike — and buried it because the scooter shop couldn't sell it
Piaggio's Wi-Bike, launched with an app and a fitness mode in 2016, quietly stopped taking new owners in 2021. Scooter dealers never worked out how to sell it.

对今天的意义
A cautionary trade story for anyone launching a premium tech product through a sales channel built for a simpler one — the engineering doesn't matter if the shop can't sell or fix it.
怎么回事
Piaggio unveiled the Wi-Bike in Milan in May 2016: an electric-assisted bicycle designed and built entirely in its Italian plants, with a smartphone app, a security code linking the display to the motor, and a fitness mode that adjusted how much the motor helped so a rider could hold a target effort. Prices started around 2,899 euros. It was pitched as a step beyond the scooter — mobility, leisure and fitness in one machine.
The trade version of what happened next, repeated on e-bike owner forums rather than in any Piaggio statement: the bikes went to the same dealers who sold Vespas and mopeds, and those dealers treated a 3,999-euro connected bicycle the way they treated a scooter accessory. Owners describe hunting for a shop that could even diagnose a fault. When Continental, which supplied the belt drive, pulled out of the e-bike business in 2020, Wi-Bike owners say support for that whole line went with it.
Piaggio never announced a discontinuation. What owners noticed instead was quieter: online registration for the Wi-Bike range closed in October 2021, dealers who had carried it stopped, and the only trace left on Piaggio's own retail sites became leftover accessories for a bike no longer sold. The story circulates among e-bike owners as the case of a manufacturer that built a genuinely engineered product and then handed it to a sales network built for something else entirely.
为什么会这样
- Wi-Bike went through the same dealer network that sold Vespas and mopeds, and forum accounts describe those dealers as unable to service or explain a connected e-bike
- A key supplier, Continental, withdrew from the e-bike belt-drive business in 2020, and owners say the support that depended on it did not survive the exit
- There was no public wind-down: no press release marked the end, just a registration cutoff and dealers quietly dropping the line, which is why the story survives only as trade hearsay
教训
A well-engineered product still needs a channel that understands it. If the people selling it can't explain or fix it, the product dies quietly no matter how good the engineering was.
后来呢
Piaggio kept building scooters and mopeds; Wi-Bike accessories lingered on Piaggio's retail sites after the bikes themselves stopped being sold. Owners on e-bike forums continued swapping fixes for units still on the road years after support ended.
