Zoox's robotaxi: the self-driving software didn't read the fire scene

On June 20 a robotaxi drove into thick smoke at an active, unconed fire scene. 105 recalled; the update teaches the stack to recognize heavy smoke.

What happened

Zoox runs driverless robotaxis on public streets. On June 20, 2026, one of them met thick smoke obscuring an active fire scene that had not yet been coned off — and the autonomous software may fail to properly detect heavy smoke around emergency scenes.

Reduced visibility from heavy smoke could increase crash risk or interfere with first responders. On July 15, 2026, Zoox recalled 105 robotaxis carrying software installed between April 23 and July 15, and shipped an update to recognize and respond to heavy smoke, including smoke from electric-vehicle fires.

No injuries occurred and Zoox found no similar events; it added interim operating measures to keep the fleet out of active fire scenes until the update landed. The edge case was a burning car the map never drew.
