What happened
Yamaki, a Tokyo shirt manufacturer listed on the TSE Standard Market, closed the Shinshu Plant of its subsidiary Yamaki Sewing in Saku City, Nagano Prefecture, on 31 March 2026. The plant, operated since 2014, produced about 4,000 made-to-order shirts a month with 74 employees.
The reason was not demand but labor. The company said production efficiency had declined markedly because of a labor shortage, and securing the personnel needed for stable operation had become difficult — so it decided to consolidate its domestic production bases.
The closure, announced on 7 January 2026, ends the plant's 12-year run as one more Japanese sewing site emptied by a workforce that is ageing and not being replaced.
Why it happened
- The sewers are gone: Japan's sewing workforce is ageing, and a Saku plant could not recruit enough hands to run its lines stably.
- Efficiency died first: labor shortage cut production efficiency before it cut capacity, turning a functioning plant into a cost that consolidation could remove.
- Consolidation is one-way: for a listed shirt maker, closing a plant in Nagano was the standard answer — the jobs move or vanish, and the region's sewing skills go with them.
