WPS billed its AI as an add-on — a '滥收费 背刺用户' backlash forced a public statement
Users called it gouging — 'WPS滥收费 背刺用户' — over AI billed separately and a shrinking free tier; Kingsoft Office answered with a four-point denial
金山办公 (Kingsoft Office, maker of WPS)
What happened
In July 2026 complaints about WPS's cache mechanism defaulting to system disk spun up into a wider charging backlash. '会员越来越贵', 'AI功能重复收费', '免费功能越来越少', 'WPS滥收费' and '背刺用户' trended across social platforms, and the debate moved from product experience to how WPS prices its features.
The trigger was monetisation widening. WPS embedded AI across its products and began billing AI 办公智能体 as a separate high-cost add-on (独立权益包 or 按量计费), while it slimmed its paid membership down to two tiers, 超级会员 and 大会员. To a base that had watched WPS close third-party advertising in December 2023 in favour of subscriptions, each change read as the free tier shrinking.
On 6 July 2026 Kingsoft Office published the statement《关于'WPS滥收费、背刺用户'等不实言论的声明》. It ran four points: free base features have never been and will never be charged or downgraded; member benefits have never been moved up to dearer tiers or shrunk; high-cost services such as AI agents are billed separately and on demand, clearly marked off from membership; and the company reserves the right to sue over slander.
The statement could not close the gap underneath it: the company's own pivot — from ads, to subscription, to separately-billed AI — is precisely the direction users were angry about. Yet the business keeps growing: WPS 365 revenue hit 7.20亿元 in 2025 (up 64.93%), and WPS AI's domestic monthly active users passed 80.13 million, up 307%.
Why it happened
- A silent free-tier squeeze: removing ads, slimming membership and moving AI behind a separate bill were each defensible alone, but together they read as the free product shrinking.
- Trust lagged the pricing model: users still felt WPS as a free tool, so an AI add-on priced separately landed as '重复收费' even where it was technically separate.
- The denial did the arithmetic for the critics: a statement insisting the charges were '不实' confirmed the company was defending exactly the billing direction users objected to.
The lesson
For a freemium product, every pricing change is a message to the free tier it grew on. Billing AI apart from the membership users already pay read as paying twice — and the denial became the story.
Aftermath
The four-point statement bought room but settled nothing: the free-tool-to-subscription-to-AI-add-on trajectory users complained about is unchanged, and the '濫收费' label now sits where the company's monetisation is debated. Commercially WPS is not hurt — WPS 365 grew 64.93% in 2025 and WPS AI MAU passed 80 million, up 307% — so the cost is reputational: a pricing model that outran the trust of the users who made the product default.
