Vichy spent 27 years building Taiwan — and left in 4 months
L'Oréal's pharmaceutical skincare brand Vichy operated in Taiwan for 27 years. In 2024, it closed every store and website in a matter of months.

What happened
Vichy, the French pharmaceutical skincare brand owned by L'Oréal, entered Taiwan in 1996. Over 27 years it built a presence across department-store counters, pharmacies, and online retail, becoming a recognised name in medical-grade skincare. On January 31, 2024, L'Oréal announced that Vichy would withdraw entirely from Taiwan.
The exit was swift. From May 2024, Vichy began closing all physical retail points and its Taiwan website. Membership point accumulation stopped on July 1. Points redemption ended on September 1, 2024, marking the complete withdrawal. Consumers were informed that no products would be available for purchase after May except through remaining inventory.
L'Oréal gave 'strategic adjustment' as the reason — industry observers interpreted this as the brand's sales volume in Taiwan no longer justifying the operating costs of maintaining a full market presence. The Taiwan market for premium skincare had become intensely competitive, dominated by Japanese, Korean and Western brands that had invested more aggressively in local marketing and distribution. Vichy's medical-pharmacy positioning, successful in Europe, failed to differentiate it enough in a market where consumers already had access to multiple well-known medical-skincare brands.
Why it happened
- Twenty-seven years of brand-building ended by a portfolio review — L'Oréal decided Taiwan no longer justified the cost of Vichy's full distribution and marketing.
- Vichy's pharmacy-channel positioning did not become a durable advantage in Taiwan's saturated premium skincare market.
- The fast exit — announcement to full closure in eight months — suggested L'Oréal had been evaluating Vichy against a threshold long before pulling the trigger.
- Once the exit was decided, the entire local operation was shut, not downsized — no distributor handover, no online-only transition.
The lesson
A brand can operate in a market for 27 years and still be disposable. When a parent company reviews its portfolio, local heritage provides no protection against a spreadsheet row that does not add up.
Aftermath
Vichy products remained available in Taiwan only through remaining retail inventory and cross-border online purchases. The brand's departure left its Taiwan customer base without local warranty, support or restocking. The case was cited in Taiwanese beauty media as an example of how global parent companies can decide a brand's fate in a market regardless of its longevity there.
