What happened
Tongcheng Tongmei (童程童美) was China's leading children's programming education brand, operated by NASDAQ-listed Tarena International (达内教育). In 2024, Tarena rebranded to Tongcheng Tongmei as part of a strategic pivot toward children's STEM education. At its peak, the chain operated over 230 offline campuses across 50+ Chinese cities.
On 12–13 January 2025, the entire network collapsed overnight. All campuses shut simultaneously; work groups were dissolved, employees reported unpaid wages (with 30% of salaries deferred since November 2024), and social security/provident fund payments were severed. In Guangzhou alone, 14 campuses ceased operations, some due to unpaid rent.
Tens of thousands of parents who had prepaid tuition for programming courses — estimated at hundreds of millions of RMB in total — found themselves unable to obtain refunds. The financial involvement was estimated in the hundreds of millions, with some reports suggesting potential losses reaching several billion RMB.
The parent company Tarena's stock had been trading at $0.735 with a market capitalisation of approximately $7.29 million before the collapse — a fraction of its former value as a leading Chinese IT training company. Reports suggested the founder may have 'absconded with funds' (卷钱跑路), though this was not officially confirmed.
What it cost
Prepaid cash ran out: fees for undelivered courses left no funds to refund parents, and 230+ campuses' fixed costs could not flex as enrolment slowed.
Why it happened
The prepaid model was a structural time bomb — fees collected for undelivered courses left no cash to honour commitments when new enrolments slowed.
Tarena pivot from adult IT training to children coding needed fundamentally different operations — campus management, child safety, parent relations — that management could not handle.
The 30% salary deferral since November 2024 signalled cash flow stress months before the January collapse — employees were effectively financing the company through unpaid wages.
230+ campuses across 50+ cities created a fixed cost base that could not flex when demand softened — the simultaneous closure suggests months of hidden insolvency.
The lesson
A chain of 230 campuses does not collapse overnight unless it was already dead — the simultaneous nationwide closure is the symptom, not the cause, of months of insolvency hidden behind prepaid cash.
Aftermath
Parents across China organised rights-defence groups to demand refunds. Employees filed labour disputes for unpaid wages. The case became a landmark in China's 2025 education sector failures, highlighting the systemic risks of prepaid models in after-school education. Tarena's NASDAQ listing became effectively worthless.
