What happened
Takashimaya Sakai, Osaka's first suburban department store, closed at 19:00 on 7 January 2026 after 61 years. Opened on 4 October 1964 next to Nankai Railway's Sakai-Higashi station, the store grew with a 1984 annex and the UP'ru specialty zone into the Sakai Takashimaya S.C. complex, and passed ¥30 billion in annual sales in 1991.
The decline was long and visible. The store recorded operating losses from fiscal 2020 and never recovered; a 2016 seismic retrofit and a large 2020 renewal, plus national tenants such as UNIQLO and ABC-MART, could not return it to profit. Revenue in the year ending February 2024 was ¥10.337 billion against 25,395 square metres of selling space and 156 employees.
On 3 December 2024 Takashimaya announced the store would close in January 2026 at the expiry of the building lease, saying it saw no prospect of profitability even over the medium term. The lease, not a turnaround plan, set the closing date.
The final day drew crowds to the food hall, with queues over an hour at tenants like Dongk and Gozasoro; no closing ceremony was held. The site is being converted by landlord Nankai Electric Railway into the HiViE Sakai-Higashi facility, with a Life supermarket opening on the ground floor in December 2026 and a full opening in spring 2027.
Why it happened
- Renovations could not fix a market that had moved on: Sakai's population shrank and shoppers shifted to modern malls, leaving a 61-year-old suburban format without a viable customer base.
- Losses ran five years with no exit trigger: the decision only came when the lease expired, so the calendar made the call management had avoided.
- The renewal investments of 2016 and 2020 were spent on a structure that had passed its peak in 1991, deepening the sunk cost rather than testing the market.
The lesson
Renovating a store cannot fix a market that has left it behind: five years of losses later, the lease expiry made the exit decision Takashimaya had avoided.
Aftermath
Takashimaya Sakai closed on 7 January 2026 with shoppers queuing into the final hours; the building was largely shuttered and converted by landlord Nankai Electric Railway into HiViE Sakai-Higashi, opening a Life supermarket on the ground floor in December 2026 and planning full opening in spring 2027. Employees were reassigned within the group. The closure was part of a wave of Japanese department store shutdowns including Seibu Shibuya (September 2026), Meitetsu (February 2026) and Kintetsu Nagoya (February 2026).
