What happened
Health authorities in Thailand are preparing to shut down the Sothornchai Nursing Home in Tha Muang district, Kanchanaburi, after finding multiple violations: providing services beyond the scope of its licence — including 'caged beds', rows of steel bars attached above beds to confine the occupants — illegal expansion, and admitting mentally ill patients. Owner Ying 'Maew' Pornsermsiri, a former nurse, will face legal action on a number of charges, Public Health Minister Pattana Promphat told a media briefing.
The ministry launched its investigation after reports that residents were subjected to physical and psychological abuse and inhumane living conditions; photographs showing the bars went viral on social media. The case surfaced when an elderly woman alleged on the popular television programme Hone-Krasae that her son and daughter-in-law had tricked her into entering the facility more than two years earlier and kept her there against her will so they could take control of a business worth billions of baht.
Police inspected the home in Tha Muang on the Tuesday before the announcement. The facility is to be closed and its residents relocated while the owner answers the charges.
What it cost
Shutdown preparations by health authorities; residents relocated; the owner faces numerous charges, including providing services beyond the scope of her licence.
Why it happened
Beds were fitted with steel bars to confine occupants — restraint used as routine care for elderly residents.
The home provided services beyond its licence's scope, expanded illegally, and admitted mentally ill patients it was not licensed to care for.
Reports of physical and psychological abuse and inhumane living conditions triggered the ministry's investigation.
Confinement and abuse became public through viral photographs and a television allegation rather than any internal control.
The lesson
Care businesses sell trust, and bed bars are its opposite: confining residents for convenience turns a licensed service into a criminal case the moment one photo leaves the building.
Aftermath
Residents are being relocated and the facility shut down. The owner faces numerous charges, and the health ministry's investigation into the home's operations continues.
